Shane K. McGurk

Shane McGurk is a partner with the firm. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1999 with his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) (with distinction) after having obtained his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (with distinction) in 1996. He was the recipient of numerous academic awards and prizes including the Margaret Hypatia Crawford and Carswell Canada Prize. Shane was admitted to the Alberta and Manitoba Bar in 2000 and since that time has practiced in Calgary, Alberta.

Shane has appeared before all levels of the Courts in the Province of Alberta and before the Courts in the Province of Manitoba. He has extensive experience with all forms of alternative dispute resolution, including, arbitration, mediation and mini-trials.

In addition, Shane has been actively involved in the continuing education of the insurance, construction and legal communities having authored papers and presented on a wide variety of topics. He has served as a lecturer at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law teaching Commercial General Liability Policies of Insurance and previously served on the editorial board of the Risk Management Counsel of Canada.

INSURANCE

Shane acts for both national and global insurers. In addition he renders services to brokerage firms, corporations with self-insured retentions and adjusting firms both as counsel and as litigator. His practice in this area involves the defence of actions brought against insureds, coverage interpretation and disputes, subrogated claims, drafting of policy wordings and the defence of actions brought against insurers. His practice involves all facets of insurance including professional liability, directors and officers liability, tavern and host liability, personal injury, products liability, fraud, occupiers liability and commercial property claims.

CONSTRUCTION, ENGINEERING AND ENERGY

Shane's primary focus in this area relates to risk management and the resolution of disputes that arise during the course of a construction project. He acts for owners, contractors, project managers, subcontractors, suppliers, architects and engineering consultants relating to the delivery and performance of construction projects. Shane also acts for and advises clients on RFP/Tender related matters, builders’ liens, surety issues, delay claims, construction contracts and different forms of project delivery. Mr. McGurk acts for a variety of design professionals and is frequently involved with multi-party litigation involving building/deficiency/ design related claims.

JEFF W. MOROZ

Jay Gill

As a barrister and solicitor, Jeff works zealously on behalf of his clients. He is pragmatic, understanding and highly responsive. Jeff has more than 40 reported decisions at all levels of Court and has acted in numerous commercial arbitrations. He has successfully represented clients as lead-counsel at trials in the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, the Alberta Court of Appeal and has handled leave applications to the Supreme Court of Canada.  

In his business litigation practice, Jeff handles cases that involve shareholder disputes, bankruptcy and insolvency matters, corporate workouts, construction matters and commercial foreclosures. He has extensive experience in fraud cases and frequently assists with pre-judgment relief for individuals and shareholders. He has also published papers on Investment Fraud, Construction Related Insolvency and given presentations on Commercial Lease matters. 

Jeff enjoys community involvement and previously held positions as coach of his son’s soccer team with the Calgary Villains Soccer Club and Chair of the Earl Grey School Council.  Jeff is a die-hard Seattle Seahawks fan, often travelling to home games in Seattle.  Rounding out his many interests, Jeff is an avid golfer and fisherman, both of which are best enjoyed with family and friends in beautiful Manitoba cottage country.
